FIT / FOBT
A non-invasive stool DNA Test that identifies biomarkers associated
with precancerous polyps and early-stage colorectal cancer.

What is a FIT Test?
A FIT test, also known as a fecal occult blood test (FOBT), analyzes a stool sample for hidden blood. While blood in the stool isn’t always a sign of cancer, it can be an early warning sign and warrants further investigation.
Why Get a FIT Test?
- Early Detection: FIT tests can help detect CRC in its early stages, even before symptoms appear.
- Early detection significantly improves treatment success rates.
- Convenient and Non-invasive: Unlike colonoscopy, a FIT test requires no special preparation or procedures. You collect a small stool sample at home using a kit provided by your doctor.
- Painless: The test itself is painless and involves collecting a small amount of stool using a special applicator included in the kit.
- Increased Screening Rates: The convenience of FIT tests can encourage individuals who might be hesitant about colonoscopy to participate in regular screening.
Who Should Consider a FIT Test?
The American College of Gastroenterology recommends regular CRC screening for average-risk individuals starting at age 45. FIT testing is a suitable option for many people. However, some factors might influence your doctor’s recommendation:
- Age: The risk of CRC increases significantly after age 45.
- Family History: Having a close relative with CRC increases your risk.
- Lifestyle Factors: A diet high in red meat, processed foods, and low in fiber, coupled with a lack of physical activity, can contribute to an increased risk.
- Personal History: Previous inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease) might necessitate earlier screening.
What does taking a FIT involve?
Taking the FIT is simple and non-invasive with a total time commitment of less than 5 minutes. ColonoscopyAssist will mail you a collection kit which will allow you to collect a small stool sample using a brush. The kit is returned to our lab using a pre-paid envelope provided and results are typically available within 7 days.
How accurate is the FIT / FOBT?
The test is considered to be very accurate. The particular test used by the program, (InsureFIT Immunochemical FOBT) has the following accuracy :
87% Sensitivity for colorectal cancer
96.6% Specificity for significant neoplasia
